And there is the ancient truth, that if the female(s) want the male(s) to stick around and help with the kids, he needs some assurance the kids are really his. That's so real, Moses, Mohammed, and Darwin all agree on it.

And those realities coexist with the reality that we are not a naturally monogamous species.
