First, thanks for the IMF post.

Melott said it is almost certain that Earth has been zapped by a gamma rays several times in its 4.5 billion year history.

A number of years ago, I did a statistical study that reached the same conclusion. You have to make some reasonable assumptions about the density of stars at the Sun's distance from the galactic center, the population distribution of these stars, and the fraction of that population that will go supernova.
