If you look at how Europeans have coped with terrorism the last 40 years, they didn't try to lock their societies up tight and make normal life impossible. They mixed prudent, active security with an understanding that life goes on with various threats all the time.

It's called keeping your grip instead of flipping out in an emotional lemming-dive off a cliff.

European travel agencies have done terrific business even while Iraq was going on, Al Qaeda is very active and the US is canceling flights right and left. They have a perspective about terrorism that lets them have a life anyway.

I am not sure Americans will reach that point for several more years at this rate. Americans think terrorism started on 9/11. The terrorists are supposed to lose the "war" we are waging, 24-3, with two touchdown passes by Homeland Security and lots of cheering before we cut to the postgame show. Game over.

It just doesn't work that way.
