That made me pretty mad too. If I had seen that happen I would have come unglued. Years ago, I worked at a spinal rehabilitation hospital. I have a lot of stories about paralyzed people, but this one is my favorite.

The hospital treated both quadriplegics and paraplegics. Most were recently injured, but some would return to the hospital periodically for what we called re-evaluations that would normally take about a week. These patients would have a battery of tests done during this time, checking their kidney function, muscular range of motion, ect... The hospital also had their own efficiency apartments for re-eval patients who were independent enough to take care of themselves after their day of testing and or rehab. So they were free in the evening, to do their shopping, go to the movies, or whatever.

One of these patients in for his re-eval was a big fellow in his mid-twenties who was a paraplegic. As a paraplegic he had to push a wheelchair to get around, but this guy really had some unusually impressive upper-body strength.

One night our patient, went to a bar and while there someone called him a cripple. That was it. This para grabbed hold of the fellow with one hand and started pounding him with the other. He even came out of his chair, when the guy pulled to get away. But he had a death grip on this guy and they both ended up on the floor while our friend in the wheelchair continued to give him a thorough ass whooping. Our patient spent that evening in jail for disorderly conduct, but I'll bet the other guy never called anybody in a wheelchair a cripple again.
