Dell CEO Says Selling TVs Will Be A 'Big Focus'

By MARK BOSLET

Of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES
LAS VEGAS -- Dell Inc. (DELL) has a solid enough brand name to sell televisions online, Chief Executive Michael Dell said Thursday.

Speaking at the Consumer Electronics Show, Dell said televisions are a "pretty easy extension" for the company, which has sold flat-panel displays with its computers for some time.

He said digital televisions that rely on silicon chips will benefit from the continued improvements in processors, much as computer power has increased sharply as chips have gotten faster and cheaper.

"Television will be a big focus for Dell going forward," he said.

With respect to selling online, "We do have the brand strength," Dell said. "We're seeing we're capable of selling a lot of (them) without the touch and feel" someone would have shopping in a store.

Television is shifting from analog to digital and people know the digital quality is good, he said.
