I'm sufficiently paranoid about this Admin that I want to know what the "hidden agenda" is.

Bush 'to announce manned mission to Mars'

George Bush is set to announce plans to send Americans to Mars and establish a moonbase.

The Mars mission would be more than a decade from now.

The last time man travelled to the moon was in December 1972.

Three senior officials said Bush wanted to aggressively reinvigorate the US space programme, which has been demoralised by a series of setbacks, including the Columbia space shuttle disaster last February.

Officials said Bush would make his announcement next week.

It isn't yet clear how Nasa would pay for lunar camps or Mars expeditions.

The moon is just a three day trip while Mars is at least six months away, and the lunar surface therefore could be a safe place to test Martian equipment.

Other uses include astronomical observatories and helium-3 fuel mines.

A task force led by Vice President Dick Cheney has been considering options for a space mission since the summer.

However former US Senator and astronaut John Glenn says the US first needs to complete the international space station and provide the taxi service to accommodate a full crew of six or seven. The station currently houses just two.
