OSAKA, Japan -- Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd. said Friday (January 9, 2004) that it is planning to spend 130 billion yen (about US$1.2 billion) on a 300-mm wafer fab at its Uozu Plant in Toyama Prefecture, confirming Silicon Strategies December 23, 2003 story.

The project is intended to increase production of chips made with 90-nanometer manufacturing processes. MEI said it plans to begin construction in May 2004 with production expected to begin towards the end of 2005.

As previously reported MEI is targeting the digital consumer electronics space, but the company specifically mentioned DVDs, digital televisions, mobile communications equipment, memory cards and network-related equipment as well as charge coupled device image sensors.

The plant would increase production capacity eventually to 7,500 wafers per month. Plans call for the upgrading of manufacturing to 65-nm processes and further expanding production capacity, the company said.
