I may surprise you. I think Bush has a pretty good idea here.
It does surprise me, at least a bit.
Stripped of all its gloss, the policy simply is this: We have a large number of criminals in our country. Instead of dealing with them as criminals, we're going to say fine, you committed crimes against our country, but that's fine, we forgive you because I want the votes of your fellow minority.
There are lots of people waiting to enter our country legally, obeying our rules and laws, waiting years for the right to enter legally. But we're not going to admit an extra few million of those. We're not going to give them any leeway, cut them any slack, reward them in any way for their honesty and integrity.
Instead, we're going to take people who have openly demonstrated that they lack respect for our rules and laws, who are criminals, and reward them, while punishing those who do try to obey our rules and laws.
Punish the honest. Reward the dishonest.
Bad policy. Very bad policy. |
