A tent revival seems unthinkable here.

To refer to a Jesus who "fought against self-righteousness" and "set an example" is to wander pretty far from the way church people in, say, South Carolina speak.

That's a super piece. Thanks for posting it.

I can't recall when the stylistic differences among Christian churches was so much of an issue. I remember when, or so it seemed at the time, the tent-revival style was considered declasse. I was raised Catholic and, although I am no longer religious, I was imprinted with the notion of religious services as solemn affairs--organs and Bach and incense and quiet. When I was a kid, Southern Baptist style seemed really alien to me. I don't know all that much about the taxonomy of Christian churches but it seems that the bias has flip-flopped.

As someone who has experienced plenty of disdain for lack of religion, I'm now watching the same applied to Christians who aren't sufficiently emotive. Yes, I know some of it is doctrine, but a lot of the bias is just style. Seems pretty un-Christian to me.
