PHILADELPHIA -- He is one of the greatest Eagles of all time. He helped them to their last championship in 1960.
Now, Chuck Bednarik wants the Eagles to lose this Sunday against the Packers.
Bednarik spoke with a Philadelphia television sports anchor last weekend.
Bednarik was a star in the Eagles' NFL title win, and he tackled Packers running back Jim Taylor to end the game.
What did Chuck get for winning the championship?
"Just five -- just $5,000," Bednarik said. "I made contact with every single play, 58 1/2 minutes, not like these pussycats today.
"God almighty, they are so overpaid and underplayed it is ridiculous," Bednarik said.
But 43 years later, "Concrete Charlie" wants the Eagles to lose.
When asked about the upcoming Eagles game, he said that "60-40" he is rooting for Green Bay.
"We won it 42 years ago," Bednarik said. "Let it take another 42 years before they win another championship."
And when asked if he wanted the Eagles to win the Super Bowl, Bednarik said he "couldn't care less."
So why is "Mr. Eagle" rooting against the Birds?
He said he is upset that Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie didn't buy copies of Bednarik's biography to give to the current Eagles.
"I'm a bitter person and I'll admit that, no question," Bednarik said. "You know, I think if Jeffrey would have bought those 100 books from me, I would have been a hell of a rooter. And it teed me off. I guess I am an old fart and bitterness just stays with me about that." |
