Does anyone know of any source that tracks start-up businesses - that is, the number of new businesses started each month or quarter? My (anecdotal) experience is that many people are starting their own one-person business rather than work for someone else. The WSJ has a number of economic indicators at online.wsj.com including:

Beige Book Report
Business Inventories (PDF)
Business Productivity
Construction Spending (PDF)
Consumer Credit
Consumer Price Index
Current Account
Durable-Goods Orders (PDF)
E-Commerce Retail Sales
Employment Cost-Index
Employment Situation
Existing-Home Sales
Factory Orders (PDF)
Gross Domestic Product
Housing Starts (PDF)
Import/Export Price Indexes
Industrial Production
International Trade (PDF)
Initial Jobless Claims
Leading Indicators
Monetary Aggregates
New-Home Sales (PDF)
Nonmanufacturing Index
Purchasing Index
Personal Income
Philadelphia Fed Survey
Producer Price Index
Retail Sales (PDF)
U. Michigan Survey
Unemployment Report
Wholesale Trade Sales (PDF)

But this is not what I want. Would I have to check state by state?
