The timing was not of my choice. I started training in the military in 1953, and for some strange reason, liked it. Being in a combat engineer company was more fun than just being a regular dog-face. Not only did we blow things up, build new ones, act as infantry if necessary, but I got me a tank when I made SFC. Talk about joy rides!! It may sound strange, but I regretted missing a war. I was trained, and wanted to use that training, but having 2 young kids, put me on the no-go list, unless I abandoned them on my own. I couldn't do that because their mom was a bit nutty.
