Yes, agreed. I'm just playing the Devil's advocate regarding caring what the U.S. thinks.
I think a large part of the problem is that we've gradually come to regard the U.S. as our "best friend" while letting many of our other friendships wither away and die. Each day, it becomes abundantly plainer that the U.S. is turning into nothing more than a fair weather friend, so it's time to get busy and cultivate those good friendships which we used to have back in the Good Old Days.
We have to realize that we are now being eyed with both suspicion and desire -- a perverse coveting of our rich natural resources which, to a country rapidly growing too big for its skin, seem arrayed before it -- waiting to be seized by a warlike neighbour who has developed the nasty habit of kicking down other people's doors to take what it wants now that it has let its "family" grow out of control to 200+ million souls. Btw, all of the above makes me sort of laugh at how our school system spent so much effort pounding the idea of "Zero Population Growth" into Canadian kids' heads from Grade One onwards for the past 30 years. How could we have been such fools to have concerned ourselves with idiotic concepts such as population control and conservation of Earth's resources -- while all the while, our neighbours to the south were multiplying like a carefree nation of jack-rabbits. ;-)>
I don't know about nuclear weapons as big hammers and such. Perhaps. But then, I'm quite the pacifist and conservationist too -- but at the same time, I don't like being pushed around by bullies either, so there is that to think of.
Mounties controlling the oil pipelines and the hydro-electric grids sounds good to me though. <g>
And, as I said above, a return to stronger foreign relations with many other nations around the world. Once we had many friends, and it could be that way again if we turned our gaze away from the south and back torwards the rest of the world where it belongs....
