I think a more accurate comparison might be to Tojo, who became a tool of the militarists in Japan prior to WWII. They convinced him that Japan could build an empire if they took out the fleet at Pearl Harbor, and would be dug in and impregnable before we could respond. But for missing the carriers, they might have succeeded. Similarly, without the counterweight of the Soviet Union, we have a world-conquering military. Most Americans wouldn't have it used that way, but some WMD scares and lies after 9/11 was all it took. I hope we can turn it around. I never wanted to be a Roman.
