haqi, you're not being genuine. First JFK directed McNamarra to end the Vietnam war. He asked for a plan to withdraw all forces from Vietnam. A couple of months later he was assassinated. LBJ and Nixon were both responsible for escalation of the war. LBJ for his Gulf of Tonkin nonsense, and Nixon for his illegal bombing and escalation of the war too. Yeah Nixon eventually gave up, as he could see the futility in trying to fight a guerilla war in a conventional sense. And anything other than the low grade grinding war they had going might set off nuclear crisis with Russia or China. That's a bunch of bull about the Clintons. And like who gives a shit what Chelsea thinks anyway. She's still popping pimples in the mirror. Bush did nothing more with the military than we have done for decades. The budget is about the same as a percentage of GNP now as it has been for years. In fact Bush has cut pay and benefits for the military. This while pursuing expensive missile defense programs, which might not work as intended, and do nothing to stop terrorists from placing a bomb in a shipping container, suitcase or other crude delivery device. National Defense also includes honoring our alliances such as Nato. National Defense also include stopping aggressor nations, such as was accomplished in Desert Storm, or WWII or WWI. I have a hard time drawing the same conclusions about this war in Iraq, and for that matter about the Vietnam war too. I don't think that fighting in Iraq has made any one safer here in America. Saddam was contained and broken. A quick three week blitz proved that. Read the writings of General Zinni. He has it right about this war. I don't think that Bush has done much for the military. I think that he's harmed our country. Orca
