I didn't frame it that way. You did.
First of all, my response about extremes was not in the context of the dichotomy but in the context of your suggestion in the post to which I responded that the Bush Administration is not extreme. I think forgoing stem cell research is pretty extreme.
Secondly, I was weighing socialism vs. the entire package of flat-earth/moralistic stuff, not a package against a single program. If I had to accept a single socialist package, say, Medicaid, to get stem-cell research, I'd do it in a heartbeat. Stem-cell research is vitally important. It's important to continually advance our science, to reinforce our hegemony in technology and health care, to improve life extension and reduce suffering from curable illnesses. Yes, that's a trade I'd make. Shouldn't have to, but if faced with a choice... |
