Discouraged Job-Seekers Mask True Jobless Rate

Message 19678693

Hi Grace, I know there is two sides to a debate, and you are a knowledgeable source. What exactly is the "Participation rate" and is that a solid number?

In December alone, Labor statisticians dropped 309,000 Americans from the labor force, no longer counting them as unemployed because they have stopped looking for work. That cut the participation rate to just 66 percent, a level not plumbed since recession-plagued 1991.

I remember 1991. It was not a good year jobs wise for many folks.

/edit. Just looking at your graphs I find them a little hard to understand. Do the graphs reflect the female population coming into the workforce over the decades?
