Should be an interesting week coming up - many different opinions out there as to what is going to happen. Here is CBSMW's take on the situation.

<<Consumers hot, inflation not

WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) -- U.S. economic growth is still not hot enough to create many jobs. Nor is it hot enough to ignite inflationary pressures.

[snip]

A busy week of economic news will highlight inflation reports, retail sales and factory indicators. The data should show low inflation, strong consumer spending and accelerating manufacturing output, economists say.

There will be plenty of speeches by Federal Reserve officials as well, including an appearance by Chairman Alan Greenspan.

After the disappointing payrolls report, markets will be keen to know how policymakers reacted to the news of tepid job growth in December. The markets pushed back their expectations for the first rate hike from June to August.

The news from the retail sector should be bright. The Commerce Department will report on December's sales at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday. Economists expect sales increased 0.8 percent after November's 0.9 percent gain, according to a survey conducted by CBS MarketWatch. See Economic Calendar.

With aggressive discounting, automakers reported one of the best sales months ever in December, with annualized sales at just over 18 million.

Chain stores reported the strongest holiday season in four years.>>
