Real Salmon Don't Do Drugs ..... <--- bumper sticker around here .... the coast of BC is indented like Scotland or Norway, or southern Chile, and the new provincial government has recently relaxed a moratorium on new fish farms, even though it's pretty clear they make massive problems, and a good slice of the population is dead set against letting the current ones operate, never mind setting up more ..... hard to say how a vote would break down, many are not aware of the situation, but fishermen certainly are, and anybody who knows a fisherman, or for that matter knows fish

Interesting subject, Pearly .... here's a page with some links, maps of sea lice infestation, etc - ubcic.bc.ca .... this summer we had a diver visit us, he had been hired to recover or move something at some fish farm, said it was unbelievable the crap that accumulates underneath those cages, and the marked difference in bottom life for some radius around .... ocean fish are pretty clearly designed to move about the ocean

There's an old oxbow of a major river near our other house, estado de Chiapas, seventeenth parallel, and government engineers dammed it up years ago, to retain seasonal water inflow .... the river now flows over 2km away, the oxbow used to flood in the rainy season, then dry up progressively through the rest of the year ... people would plant crops in the wet soil [volcanic, very rich] as it would dry .... but it's much more useful now, as a fish farm - the parcela holders had their interests converted to shares in a coop which stocked the 'lake' with what we call mojarra, a variety of tilapia, which fish is said to be the most efficient way on the planet to convert vegetable [or bug] matter to edible protein ...... in about twelve months they reach one kilo in weight, there's lots of bones but you can get onto eating them easily, they taste great and they're highly nutritious .... it all works pretty well, and best of all - no chemicals, no drugs, not even any artificial feed
