This sounds to me like Bill will endorse if Clark does well in Iowa and New Hampshire. If he emerges as "number two" you can expect it. Hillary does not want Dean to send the party down the toilet.

CLINTON IS CLARK'S DOLLAR BILL
NY Post
By FREDRIC U. DICKER

January 12, 2004 -- ALBANY - Bill and Hillary Clinton have told friends that now is the "key moment" for Wesley Clark's presidential campaign, and the former president has begun making last-minute fund-raising calls, key Democrats say.
"Bill is said to be personally involved and it's believed he's begun making money calls on Clark's behalf," one of the state's best-connected Democratic activists told The Post.

"Word out of the Clinton camp is that Bill and Hillary think this is a key moment for the Clark campaign," the activist continued.

The late-starting former general has been surging in New Hampshire primary polls and has raised more than $10 million in recent months - an impressive showing.

While neither Sen. Hillary Clinton (N.Y.) nor her husband have publicly endorsed Clark, both are widely described by Democratic insiders as among his strongest boosters.

Both are said to fear that front-running Howard Dean will lose badly to President Bush in the November election and - perhaps most troubling to potential 2008 presidential contender Hillary Clinton - contribute to new Democratic losses in the Senate and House.

In a conference call with reporters yesterday, Clark spokesman Matt Bennett denied that the former president was involving himself with the race yet: "He's not going to get involved until there's a clear nominee," said Bennett.
