I think Mortensen has a right to air his views, even though I think he's a moonbat. Where he crosses the line is that he thinks he has the right to push his views on people, even in venues where he has obviously been asked just as an actor, such as the Charlie Rose show.

I don't know why actors should be constantly asked for their political opinions, but you can't blame them for replying if they are. But their friends should remind them that they aren't experts.

BTW, in interviews on the DVD, Mortensen keeps saying that Rings is about "loyalty" and "friendship". Well, obviously it is in part, but it also tackles some rather larger subjects: Good. Evil. Life. Death. Mortality. Two Towers delivered the message on a salver, "There's good in the world, and you've got to fight for it." I just get the impression that Mortensen is profoundly uncomfortable with the message of LOTR on any of those subjects.
