That's called imperialism...

I prefer the role of umpire over the global economy, being that we're the largest economy on the planet...

But that role could easily be seized by any other economy that is able to exceed our capabilities...

IOW, we set the parameters of what's tolerable and intolerable behavior that affects our interest and those of our trading partners.

But it could easily be Europe that set the rules, should they be able to prove themselves more capable of leading the global world economy.

Or it could one day be China, should they ultimately adapt their system to be as accountable and politically inclusive as ours (which would be requisite, IMO, to exceeding US economic pre-dominance).

That keeps us "hungry" and resistant to too much complacency. And that's the only way in which human progress has managed to advance.
