But THIS war is different. It was understood in the Mexican War that once Mexico capitulated, it was over. The Spanish American War ended with the Spanish surrender. WW1 ended with the German surrender. WW2 ended with the surrender of Italy, Germany, and Japan. The intent of the Vietnam War was that N. Vietnam would agree to stop sponsoring armed resistance in the south. Didn't work; we eventually declared victory and went home.

But where does this one end? The "war on terror"? With the death of the last al Qaeda (assuming that ever happens?) When? Will not other organizations spring up to replace them?

Curtailment of civil rights were accepted in most previous wars. Lincoln suspended habeas corpus. The press was censored in WW1 and WW2. But these wars had foreseeable, definable ends. Does this one? Does ANYONE really believe that, short of massive use of nukes, we can "defeat" the Muslim world? Are you REALLY willing to do that? Are you really willing to invade maybe a dozen, maybe more countries to win the "war on terror"?

How's this for a thought? The BASIC cause of this is US support of Israel. THAT is why we are a target. So is US foreign policy decided in Jerusalem?
