I think it may be that the folks who sit in cafes leisurely sipping latte from porcelain cups are perceived as arrogant snobs who think they're better than ordinary people. And people perceived as snobbish are generally not popular in America. Now where would that perception come from?

Why stop and eat in a cafe when you can take your SUV thru the drive-thru window and eat on the road while you watch the custom-installed onboard DVD player?
They call that progress in America. That's what "the American way of life" has become. No wonder they hate people who walk, sit in cafes, drink coffee from porcelain instead of plastic or paper and shop on neighborhood streets instead of strip malls.
