I have respect for O'Neill when he came clean on this matter, but the current admin's choice of treasury leaders is weak to say the least. O'Neill is better than Snow (who is really horrible imho)- but none of these people can stand up to Rubin and Tyson, the kind of people Clinton had on his economic team.

During the russian debt crisis and asian crisis in the 90s the Clinton economic team made some phone calls to quell the markets and those crises were pretty much mitigated. When the iraq war started up (when Bush STARTED the iraq war voluntarily I mean)- cnbc had a round table and said that the only person in the entire white house who was even close to being able to calm the markets in times like this was Powell.... but he was not a financial adviser to the WH. In other words O'Neill didn't have the "clout" that Rubin did. Well duh. And this is why this white house can't deal with trade and is confused by the economic figures which are clear as day for anyone if they open their eyes. O'Neill and Snow were average managers of stodgy oldline industries and they were average economic advisers.

Since Dean is so much smarter than Bush I hope he hires a team like the Clinton team- young and smart. But these old republican geezers out to pasture. Another 4 years like this and the US will decline into oblivion sheesh.
