TCG Selects ADC Soneplex for HDSL T1 Services ÿ Check It Out -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Copyright c 1997 TeleChoice, Inc. August 12, 1997 -- ADC Telecommunications, Inc. has announced that it is providing its Soneplex intelligent, T1-based services delivery system to Teleport Communications Group, Inc. (TCG).
The Soneplex system will enable TCG to provision and manage high bit-rate digital subscriber line (HDSL)-deployed T1 services. TCG, which provides fiber-optic-based services in 57 major markets, will install the Soneplex system in the central offices of select incumbent local exchange carriers (referred to as collocation sites) to provide voice and data services over copper in those instances where TCG leases lines in major metropolitan areas throughout the US.
ADC's Soneplex system is an intelligent DS1 platform that allows TCG to interconnect to high-speed interoffice facilities via a DS3 or STS-1. More importantly, the Soneplex platform allows centralized control and supervision of DS1 circuits from TCG's network operations center. TCG chose ADC as its primary HDSL provider because the Soneplex system provides superior, end-to-end circuit visibility in addition to remote provisioning and maintenance features when installed at the collocation facility.
"As compared to alternative HDSL plug-in solutions, the Soneplex solution offers integrated multiplexing to match TCG's fiber-optic SONET network transport design, as well as substantially improving management functionality," said Ken Shulman, senior vice president of technology for TCG.
Doug Olsen, manager of network modeling technology for TCG, said, "By placing the Soneplex system at the collocation site, TCG now owns both ends of the network, greatly enhancing our management capability and significantly reducing costs by eliminating unnecessary visits to the collocation site for turn-up and maintenance."
"Having already penetrated numerous major markets, TCG is leading the charge into new local markets using innovative technology and providing superior customer service," said John Griffin, vice president of marketing at ADC's Network Services Division. "The features and capabilities of the Soneplex platform add to TCG's arsenal by allowing quick and cost-effective installation of T1-based services to meet the increasing customer demand for robust, reliable voice and data services."
Given that Soneplex will eventually support DMT-based ADSL as well as HDSL, the selection of ADC could play a major role in who TCG selects as an ADSL supplier. TCG and other aggressive LECs are likely to deploy the bulk of the xDSL lines in 1997 and early 1998. TCG, who recently won a role as telco for the city of San Diego away from Pac Bell, will likely be one of the more aggressive and innovative service providers and TeleChoice expects that their ADSL plans will be significant.
