I am relatively familiar with the German/Turkish situation, but not really, as I am ignorant of its historical origins, (and frankly, a fail to understand the "logic" that led to the program), but I knew of its existence and in my days of European horsing around, I met a few Germans and Turks who expressed their opinions to me, and of course, my own observations of it.

The Germans imported Turks for three reasons: (1) Their country was divided by the wall which impacted worker availability. (2) The vast majority of their work force was dead as a consequence of the War. (3) Turk labor was cheap and "would be easy to send back". Number (3) didn't happen though since life in a rebuilt Germany was far better than in Istanbul, Ankara or Izmir.
