The situation in Iraq really isn't very like Vietnam. 3 American soldiers being killed in Vietnam wouldn't get news attention. At the peak of Vietnam you had about as many Americans dieing in a week as the number of Americans that have died now.

A lot has been made by some that the number of Americans killed in Iraq is higher then the number of Americans killed over the equivalent period since the beginning of our military involvement in Vietnam. But in Vietnam we started with advisors only. Later on we had to fight against Vietnamese armies, and the NVA inflicted a lot more American casualties then the Viet Cong. The amount of American deaths in Vietnam once we started major combat operations quickly dwarfed the total so far in Iraq. What army are we going to have to fight against in Iraq? What force in Iraq could pull off something like the Siege of Khe Sanh?

That article is from October so the total number killed has gone up a bit but the points are all still accurate.
