Politics is the science of the absurd. The only thing that creating more parties achieves is breaking up the competition. Divide and Conquer... The PRI (the party of the Mexican Monarchy -g) did that very effectively during the 70's They put together a collection of nuts from the old revolutionary retired generals, the young green-o-wackos, the frustrated communist-bourgeoisie, the recalcitrant Castro allies and the conservative-Catholics and ended up with about 7 parties... All they achieved was to extend their hold on power for 20 more years or so... Not bad for a relatively cheap initiative with little risk that would actually work... Plus it wiped out the possibility of a serious revolution that was always looming in the mountains, until of course the Army killed their most persuasive leader, I forget when that exactly happened (but it did happen). What really matters is: what can the guy in power really achieve? WHO cares what party does he come from? The problem then is that because of the party you then create a form of paralysis (such as the last few years) that renders politicians irrelevant, or worse, a hindrance to the system. In the end, it is up to business and in this country, (USA) this usably means the small businessman.
