The US has been very very smart as to how to manage its empire... political power has been the exception... (as opposed to the Roman, Spanish and British empire...)

All of them were saddled with the costs of local controls and passorts etc.... (easier immigration and such)

but today it just is not working anymore... I mean they can hardly manage their own.. let alone any colonies...
