I hope you are right and that this will be followed through with (funding included).

A lot of people say that venturing into space is a waste of money, and I have a hard time refuting them. Space IS a waste of money. But our government wastes so many billions every year that it is a drop in the bucket in comparison.

And venturing into space provides tax-paying citizens with tangible proof of their contributions. "Here you have it ... through your contribution we have put a man on Mars!" Vicariously we accomplish great things.

Also it is something to inspire children. I know I found the Apollo program very inspiring, and I think children today, who are exposed to thousands upon thousands of hours of crap through the media, would find it similarly inspiring.
