Trying to close the Mexican border is shoveling water against the tide. It just can't be done. I know you think that if we throw enough money at it, we can. I don't agree.
There was a time, some decades back, when that border was at least fairly well controlled. That didn't suit CA liberals who saw a vote with every body that got across and then got legalized, though. They proceeded to gut border control. Now the situation probably IS hopeless for political reasons. 1/3 of CA's population is Hispanic. That's a lot of votes.

But it could be done if the will could be found. What was the army doing before Iraq, anyway?

I'd go to the other extreme also: Open the border. Free flow of goods and people. BUT the Mexican gov't must agree to give US citizens the same rights Mexican citizens have here: they can work, they can own land, they can start businesses, they can become citizens.

But that has been something the Mexican gov't has wanted nothing to with. They want it their way, period.
