All sperm have the potential to fertilize the egg and thus create a human life.

Sperm have the potential to cause human life to be created and to be part of the material used to create that human life. Fertilized ova are examples of human life already. We would define this a little bit differently for example I would not say that infants are not fully human. I don't agree that being human is about consciousness or higher reasoning. Some humans are not at the conscious at any particular moment, and many are very limited in their reasoning ability, also its quite possible (in my opinion likely) that there are conscious, reasoning alien races. They would not be human.

If society has a claim on a fetus then it obviously has a claim on the precursor to the fetus (if we are to try to attach some meaning to your "potentiality" argument--which I am doing only for argument's sake and to show how capricious it is). So on what basis does society lay a claim on your wife's zygoye or on your sperm?

The claim is the claim of the fetus or zygote, society would be acting on his or her behalf. The sperm has no claim.

"abortions are not performed on fertilized eggs."

Sorry...abortions happen spontaneously on fertilized eggs millions of times a day, and they are induced by "morning after" pills on fertilized eggs to prevent their attachment to the lining or to remove them from the lining.

I'm not talking about "spontaneous abortions". As for the "morning after pill" you have something of a point. I don't think that what winds up getting destroyed is still a fertilized egg. I think at that point it is a multi-celled organism (even if it has only 2 or 4 cells) but its still very few cells so you might consider this a technicality. Also most induced abortions occur later.
