He wanted to defeat us. The only way he could defeat us is to get our neck stuck out on his turf. He wanted us to take the place of the Russians. The only way he could do that would be to pull something so outrageous that we would have no choice but to come after him. I don't believe for a minute that he thought the US was going to shrivel up and run away. He wanted a war, and he took steps to make absolutely sure he'd get one.
