It's a company town, owned and operated by a corrupt family firm, who keep themselves in business because they have bought out the priests to tell everybody that it's G-d's will to obey the bosses. The people know the bosses are pigs, but they're very religious and they daren't disobey the priests to organize a strike. So they are quietly going crazy.

I do believe you have the right idea, there.

Note my post on what Debka reported the Saudi interior minister as saying to reformers. "Shut up, we're here to rule you, not take your concerns into account."
