Abbott Labs to acquire maker of blood-monitoring equipment

January 14, 2004

North Chicago, Ill. (Associated Press) -- Abbott Laboratories Inc. has agreed to buy blood-monitoring equipment maker TheraSense Inc. for $1.2 billion in cash in a deal that would broaden Abbott's involvement in products used in the treatment of diabetes.

The transaction announced Tuesday is expected to be completed during the second quarter, pending approval by regulators and shareholders.

TheraSense, based in Alameda, Calif., has developed, manufactured and marketed blood glucose self-monitoring systems since June 2000.

Abbott has been in the blood glucose monitoring field since its acquisition of MediSense in 1996.
