China Unicom Adds 1.16M CDMA Users In Dec; Misses FY Goal

HONG KONG (Dow Jones)--China Unicom Ltd. (CHU) added a net 10.665 million users to its code division multiple access network in 2003, missing its target by more than 700,000.

In December, its CDMA subscriber base grew by 1.163 million users, according to a statement issued by the company Thursday. That represented only slight growth from 1.10 million additions in November, and compared with 1.31 million additions in October and 1.3 million in September.

The company didn't comment on the figures.

China Unicom Executive Vice President Shi Cuiming said in November it would be "a challenge" for the company to achieve its targets of 11.4 million new CDMA subscribers in 2003 and break-even for the CDMA division.

The company decided in early 2003 to scale back its handset subsidies to help it with its profitability target. Later in the year, it launched a prepaid system and started buying CDMA handsets in bulk at lower prices, in an attempt to cut customers' costs and stimulate demand.

However, of its 1.163 million new CDMA subscribers last month, 83% were for its postpaid service, implying just 17% of its subscriber growth in December was for the prepaid service.
