What now? Now, by all indications outside of official propaganda channels, is a mess.

What next? Bremer puts together, under strict orders from above, something that will officially be declared "democracy" in time for Karl Rove to sell it before the election.

The problem is, the Cheney / Rumsfeld crowd running things has been truly effective at freezing out anybody who might be able to assist the US in Iraq, and they still have no apparent plan beyond some Chalabi installation variant - e.g. putting people they like in power and calling it "democracy". As long as they're running things, the most likely muddled future course seems a drift to separatist autonomy among the Kurds, a drift to clerical leadership among the Shiites, and a drift to further guerilla war and Israeli "hearts and minds" tactics by the US in the Sunni heartland.

At least it'll keep Cheney and Rumsfeld from starting another war soon. Too bad the bill so far is $167 billion or so and counting.
