Thousands of Iraqis gather to demand elections Tens of thousands of Iraqis have gathered outside the main Shia Mosque in the southern city of Basra to demand direct elections for the country's new authorities. The demonstration follows a call by local clerics for a show of force to back their demand for elections. Clerics at the main Shia mosque called Iraqis to show their rejection of the US plans for Iraq. The mosque was surrounded by people in a show of force and power in a warning to the US that it cannot afford to ignore the Shia. The top Shia cleric in Iraq, Grand Ayotollah Ali Sistani, has rejected the current US proposal.
