The gist of what you said is what I said - it's the damned press.
You are correct, different people handle things differently, but is it any of our business what was said following his father's death in the locker room ? Nope. This is why I dislike 80% of the press.
I could get started, and go on and on, but all I want is the facts of the sport at hand, I couldn't care less if a guy had a bad game because he was spotted at a bar at 3 a.m. before the game, or got a DUI, or whatever. Do we really need to know any details of contracts or salaries ? no.
The NY Post runs a story about Clemens signing with Houston with the banner 'Houston ASStro'...... is that necessary ? What a great item for our kids to see...... damned press.
Yes, I miss him after 37 years, and I will always miss him, I miss everyone I have lost, I expect that you do also, it doesn't make it any easier, but we have to move on. I know folks expect athletes to block out stuff, and play the game, to some extent, I am no different, but I also don't think you can block out 100% of everything. A very good friend of mine was on the 1980 and 1984 Olympic teams, and I asked him if he ever thought of stuff that would ruin his concentration during his event, like a joke, or naked women, etc. and he said no, you just don't, you are conditioned to do only what you are supposed to do for x amount of time, and you have to do that. (The 1980 team that Pres Carter wouldn't let compete in Russia). |
