The US screwed up math teaching. In 1957, the Russians put the Spunik in orbit. It was a huge blow to the Americans. They were busy making cars with fins and the Russians were producing scientists and engineers by the bus-load.

To compete the Americans changed the curriculum of thier schools heavy on math. By accident Elmat stated the first year of his high school with what was called "modern mathematics".

Because the Brazilians were aping the Americnas they chnaged their curriculum too. But since anything that gest done y govenrments are always done wrong, they screw up a few generations of students until the damage started being corrected in the 90's 30 years after Elmat discovered math was being taught the wrong way.
