Plans? How would we know if we won this war?

The goal of this war was supposed to be security. Instead a high-orange alert has become more of a holiday tradition than realtor calendars or fruitcakes. Fighter jets accompany our aircraft, the handicapped spaces are still blocked off at the airport, and the police spend their weekends and afternoons walking around the power plants and bridges. That's not security.

Some have suggested that a real goal of the war was the oil fields of Iraq. Iraq, with the second largest known reserves in the universe cannot even supply it's own gas stations because of the unrest, sabotage, and an unwillingness to pump oil for the occupiers. The neocons can't even loot the oil anymore and have had to abandon their plans to "privatise" the industry. It will be reorganized as a national company run by whoever seizes the Iraqi council. They oilmen aren't winning.

The most determined of neocons appear to have promoted the war to help Israel consolidate their settlements in Palestine. Ever since the planning for the Iraq invasion began, ten days after Bush assumed office, the situation in Israel has become desperate. Even arch-Likudnik Sharon has been forced to rebuild the Berlin Wall and turn Israel into a ghetto on the sea. The suicide bombers don't seem to have needed any payments from Saddam, they continue their grim mission of tit-for-bulldozer and tat-for-assasination. Israel is worse off than when Bush was appointed.

Osama Bin Laden? In the 850 days since Dubya said he would get him dead or alive, Osama has turned out more recordings than Madonna and seems to enjoy nature hikes in mountains of Pakistan. The Americans have largely retreated from all but the city parks of Kabul, and the Afgan locals are back to choosing between war lords and the Taliban. Only the poppy growers are suceeding.

If we are winning in Iraq, then what is our prize?

If we are not winning, then what are we doing there?
