those French who burn down McDonalds restaurants as a symbol of resistance to American ideas.

Not really. Their problem is with globalization - i.e. giant corporations sucking the life out of little domestic businesses, the way they see it. "American ideas" (whatever that means) has nothing to do with it.

I guess all those Iraqis who are bombing our troops there, criticizing us, etc., have extensive experience here in the US.

Hello? Your country has invaded and is now occupying their country. They are understandably a little irritated. Their resistance to American occupation does not really necessitate an in-depth understanding of the American way of life, imho.

After Pearl Harbour, Americans did not need much of an understanding about the Japanese culture to not only criticize but also start killing the Japanese. Try to think of it this way, although I realize that putting yourself in others' shoes might be a bit difficult for you.
