Michael,

The problems with the dock have been debated for sometime now. Most UI people are very critical. Here are a couple of problems.

1) it moves items around spatially in other words it reorders stuff
2) things move around when you are trying ot drag and drop on them
3) Icons that are pictures are less effective than icons
4) It pops up in front of your work at the worst times
5) trash in dock violates a cardinal rule of usability

Just a few off the top. There are others. Many people also think that all the animations slow down the desktop making X feel like you are swimming in honey (compared to 9).

Dragstip allows one to have a bunch of dock with permanent icons in a tabbed environment and puts the trash back on the desktop where it belongs. Actually OS9s tabbed folders beat both in some ways. Why they didn't expand on that idea is beyond me. We should be able to put tabbed folders on 2 sides of the desktop and leave the dock except allow people to eliminate the dock altogether.

Now that I'm ranting: They've finally implemented colored labels. But has anyone else tried using labels in list view? It's almost unusable because the way they've implemented it with the color all the way across the bar makes it very hard to distinguish which item is highlighted as opposed to which item is blue or grey listed.

Bottom line really is we should have choices and Apple blew it when it fired the interface guys. That will come back to haunt them repeatedly over the years.
