>>"Buy American" is a great idea and I adhere to it whenever possible but it has become increasingly difficult, especially when shopping at Wal-Mart-type stores, which give profits the nod over patriotism these days. Plus, those American corporations mentioned in the article rely on foreign sales. If your idea is to work, it would seem that policy changes from the Bush Regime are needed in the form of protective tariffs of some sort to foment that "Buy American" environment. I'm not sure tariffs are a good thing in this era of globalization but I'm not sure what the solution should be. Perhaps there isn't a solution and economic globalization will bring parity to the nations of the world. But at what cost to us? I think the solution may be some sort of globalization for specific goods dominated by Wendell Berry's "Local Economy." But I don't think I'll see anything like that in my lifetime.<<

CC,
Thanks for the level-headed, thoughtful response. Yes, it's complicated political & economic situation in USA today but our primary interest must be to support millions of unemployed countrymen. Even Pres Fox of Mexico defends & takes steps to protect his citizens best interests when they have illegally migrated to U.S. It would be comforting to know that our own President had that mindset. Instead his 1st priority is to protect those Mexican workers as well....for sake of his slave-wage labor hungry campaign contributors.
