If you spend enough money you can do all kinds of things -- but there are always choices and priorities. If there were no limits to our spending ability, we could have a golf tournament on mars for all I care. But to say that manned space exploration is so compelling that it is worth saddling our children with hundreds of billions of dollars in additional debt is ludicrous. We don't have the money and we should not borrow the money to do this while there are other and more pressing priorities. Manned space flight makes for good photo-ops and drums up support for other space activities. If you cannot convince people to spend more money on space, too bad. As for science, there are all kinds of things worthy of our scientific effort -- space is just one on the list, and it is not at all clear that the scientific payoffs from space are greater than science on earth.
