Initial jobless claims fell a surprising 11,000 to 343,000 in the week ended January 10. Other than uncertain distortions tied to the holidays, there were no specific factors affecting the data.

Jobless claims continue to run in contrast with the monthly jobs report, clouding the economic outlook and adding some confusion to the financial markets. If claims extend their improvement next week, expectations for January's employment situation report are likely to improve sharply.

The Labor Department warned Thursday that claims data during the holidays fluctuate "wildly". The department also warned of severe volatility over the next two weeks.

The four-week average, maybe less wild, clearly confirms strength, falling 3,000 to 347,500 - a 3-year low. Continuing claims also confirm strength, falling 128,000 in the January 3 week to 3.14 million - a 2-1/2 year low.
