Hide the Women And Kids! Here Come The 'Barbarians'

Sunday, January 18, 2004; Page Y04

The History Channel offers two evenings of barbaric derring-do this week as it unfolds its two-night, four-hour treatment of "Barbarians."

The first installment Monday at 9 p.m. features the Vikings and then the Goths. Tuesday the series examines the Mongols and the Huns.

The presentations combine expert commentary with elaborate re-creations. More than 400 costumes were produced for the series, along with an impressive roster of sets, props and location work.

Three ship reproductions were built for the Vikings segment, and sets and location work evoke Roman towns, castles, walled fortresses and farms and towns.

The series asks the question, how could such primitive folks dominate seemingly more advanced civilized groups?
