And Republican spending programs. Actual spending usually goes up more under Republican administrations.

A national sales tax or a VAT? A VAT would at least get corporations paying their fair share, and it's the French way, which I'm sure appeals to you.
But taxing consumption in a consumption driven economy, IMHO, is crazy. Sure path to a recession, if not worse. You like the idea because you could bleed the working (and non-working) poor. We could probably put 10% homeless, a good thing, right?
