A national sales tax or a VAT? A VAT would at least get corporations paying their fair share, and it's the French way, which I'm sure appeals to you.

NST, NOT a VAT. Corporations never pay taxes, people do. Corporation's taxes are simply a component of the price of the corporation's products to the ultimate consumer.

But taxing consumption in a consumption driven economy, IMHO, is crazy. Sure path to a recession

I'm not sure how one can make such a statement. It would be such a radical restructuring of our economy the term "recession" would take on an entirely new meaning. But the surge in productivity alone would be a transforming event.

You like the idea because you could bleed the working (and non-working) poor. We could probably put 10% homeless, a good thing, right?

The working (and non-working) poor would pay zero tax -- and the regressive payroll taxes would be eliminated. MY approach (although, I must admit I haven't seen it bandied about) would be to issue a "smart-card" each year to those people who met those criteria which would exempt them from tax a year at a time.

The bottom line is that a huge proportion of American productivity is down the tubes, wasted on needless tax accounting. Overnight, this goes away.

Certainly has a great appeal to me...
